Back in 2017, ED² started the journey as part of the global design collaboration to create the future of Toyota’s EV line-up.
The target was to create a new design surface language and architecture for both Exterior and Interior of our future EV line up. It was a big challenging yet very exciting. The Specific EV architecture and platform allowed us to have more freedom to challenge the design.
We developed a new expression of Precision Organic that translated into a Warm Tech approach. Contrasts of organic and crisp surfaces to express newness and avoid a too ‘robotic tech’ appearance that some competitors were trying. We expressed this in a variety of ways depending on the size and potential customer for the vehicle. The Front identity was key to differentiate and we focussed on a unique corner consolidated expression for each proposal. This combined with the Hammerhead and interlock themes gave us a strong front and rear identity, minimizing parts and simplifying due to smart concealment of the shut lines.
The target was to create a specific architecture of the interior to emphasize the new EV platform and technology. The key was to provide to the customer a holistic new experience, a better use of the space for personal comfort and storages.
We achieve the result disrupting the typical construction of the car interior, collecting many functions in limited and specific elements. The ‘bathtub’ concept was the base, and then elements were integrated to give a unique overall ambience for EV that could be attractive yet highly functional for the Target customers.
We were very happy that ED² initiated ideas were selected for the further development of both interior and exterior. It was a great honour to be part of the team and collaborate in a unique and beneficial way for the Future of Toyota.
