ED² advanced model inspired FT-Se shown in Tokyo Mobility Show

From 2020 Toyota sports EV to Tokyo 2023 Toyota FT-Se

We asked ourselves within the team in 2019, how could we combine the very functional performance driven mindset from the GR brand, with an emotional and beautiful surface. The project was a pure shape study at the beginning, to get every department on board. Creating that pure excitement. The prototype was created in Italy, and we had fun creating this beautiful model.

This project was basically created from scratch, started drawing a line on a blank paper, with the aim of creating an exciting EV sports car for Toyota.

Obtainable exotic become our Key phrase , to achieve a dream sport-car for any rookie racer.

The goal was set, and Simon Humphries was confident to show this first concept, at the BEV event , alongside of other Toyota and Lexus products.  This concept car was one of the most eye catching sports EV at BEV announcement back in December in 2021 by Akio Toyoda. Many media didn’t miss the opportunity to pick up this sports EV sitting very last line of the event discretely in line with the other EVs.

We didn’t know if this project would go any further. But, 3 Years later, ED² and GR design department in Japan worked hard together to bring this shape study into a near possible future, trying to maintain the key elements from the 2020 Toyota sports EV concept, but considering even more the fusion between performance and beauty. So there’s no doubt that this Sports EV gave massive inspiration to the stunning looking FT-Se Concept showcased during the Tokyo Mobility show in October 2023.

I was happy to be able to travel to Japan for joining the team, with Ian Cartabiano , Hide Hideaki at the 2023 Tokyo mobility show, where the press and public got the first view of the Toyota FT-Se concept. 

Seeing the GR brand showcasing its exciting future of EV sportscars, based on the values that we created back in ED², felt rewarding²and proud to be a part of this global team. It was as well the first time for me to sit inside this exotic Sportscar layout, a layout that we believed from the very early stage of this project. Overwhelming attentions this car got during the show was confirmed at the Kenshiki Forum organised by TME in November in Brussels, we could see the excitement of Toyota team as well as European media.

2019年、私たちはデザインチーム内で、GRブランドの非常に機能的なパフォーマンス重視の考え方と、エモーショナルで美しい表面をどのように組み合わせることができるかをかんがえました。このプロジェクトは、当初はすべての部門を巻き込むための純粋なフォルムの研究でした。純粋に高揚感を高める美しいフォルム。プロトタイプはイタリアで作成され、このモデルの美を極める作業は純粋にとても楽しかったです。 このプロジェクトは、基本的にゼロから作成され、白紙に線を引き始めるところから始まりました。トヨタのエキサイティングなEVスポーツカーを作成することを目的として、チームで取り組みました。 普通の人でも手に入るエキゾチックな美しさを併せ持つスポーツカーは、「新人レーサーのための夢のスポーツカー」が私たちのデザインする際のキーワードとして使われました。

私たちデザインの最高責任者でもあるサイモン・ハンフリーズは、他のトヨタやレクサス製品と一緒に、BEVイベントでこの最初のコンセプトを披露することに決め、その決断に自信を持っていたと考えます。 このコンセプトカーは、2021年12月に豊田章男が発表したすべてのBEVの中で最も注目を集めたEVの1つでした。多くのメディアは、このスポーツEVがイベントの最後尾にひっそりと展示されていたのですが、この貴重な機会を逃さず、多くのデザイン系、カーマガジンがこのモデルについての憶測を記事にしました。

このプロジェクトがこれ以上どのように進むかどうかは当時はわかっていませんでした。しかし、その3年後、ED²と日本のGRデザイン部門は、2020年のトヨタスポーツEVコンセプトの重要な要素を維持しながら、パフォーマンスと美しさの融合をさらに検討し、このフォルム研究を近い将来に実現するために懸命に努力しました。このスポーツEVが、2023年10月の東京モビリティショーで披露された美しい外観のFT-Seコンセプトに大きなインスピレーションを与えたことは間違いありません。 2023年の東京モビリティショーで、イアン・カルタビアーノ氏、このFT-SeのPCDでもある飯田氏とともに、プレスや一般の人々がトヨタFT-Seコンセプトを初めて目にすることができました。同時に私はインスピレーションを与えたモデルのデザイナーとして日本でFT-Seがお披露目される場、東京モビリティショーへ行けたことを嬉しく思います。

GRブランドがED²で作り上げた価値観をベースに、EVスポーツカーのエキサイティングな未来を披露しているのを見て、やりがいを感じました。そして、このグローバルチームの一員であることを誇りに思いました。また、このエキゾチックなスポーツカーのインテリアに座ったのも初めてで、このプロジェクトの初期段階から信じていたインテリアレイアウトだったことにも喜びを覚えました。２０２３年11月にブリュッセルで開催されたTME主催の「Kenshiki Forum」（見識フォーラム）では、トヨタチームだけでなく欧州メディアからの注目度も高く、みんながこのFT-Seへ向け熱狂感が伝わってきました。
